Great River Family Promise provides temporary emergency shelter to families experiencing homelessness. GRFP is supported by thirteen houses of worship and engages between 800 to 1000 community volunteers. Host congregations provide overnight shelter, meals, and support services for up to four families for one week every 4 months on a rotating basis. Families have access to a day center which houses administrative offices and provides a place to do laundry, take showers, store a few personal items and receive mail. Transportation between the day center and congregation facilities is provided through the network.
Part of a national network, Great River Family Promise is one of over 184 affiliates across the United States. There are over 5000 congregations and 120,000 volunteers making up these networks. Interfaith Hospitality Networks have been helping homeless families since 1986.
