Stewart Wilson of Elk River honored for 50 years in community banking

Stewart Wilson, longtime board director of The Bank of Elk River, has received the Legacy of Community Banking Award from BankIn Minnesota.

The award recognizes individuals with more than 50 years of service to community banking and civic leadership. Wilson was among the 2025 honorees announced this month.

Wilson’s career reflects a lifetime of commitment to both the bank and the Elk River community. He began at The Bank of Elk River in 1975 as a summer employee and advanced from teller to branch manager before joining the board of directors. He helped guide the bank through periods of growth and economic change while mentoring future leaders.

His service extended into the community through decades on the Elk River Planning Commission, Housing and Redevelopment Authority, City Council and nonprofit boards, including Guardian Angels of Elk River and the Mercy Unity Foundation.

“Stewart’s legacy is one of integrity, leadership and unwavering dedication,” said John Babcock, chairman, CEO and president of The Bank of Elk River. “His impact on our institution and community is immeasurable.”

Wilson said he hopes his work “as a community banker and active participant in community activities had a positive economic and social influence on the development of the local area served by the bank.”

The Bank of Elk River, founded in 1885, is one of Minnesota’s largest community banks, with more than $700 million in assets and four branches in Elk River, Otsego and Zimmerman.

Community engagement has been a pillar of The Bank of Elk River’s mission since its founding—each year, the bank donates more than $80,000, and employees log about 1,000 volunteer hours.
