On its first day in June 2020, the Elk River-based nonprofit Community Table served about 250 free meals to residents at the Sherburne County Fairgrounds. The menu included a hamburger or hot dog, apple slices, a bag of chips and a cookie. Five-and-a-half years later, the organization has become a popular local institution. Beginning January 1, 2026, only Elk River residents will be able to use the Yard Waste Transfer Site and must apply for a card online. Residents will have to pay a $25 annual fee and register their vehicle and trailer. Commercial users will also be able to use the site for an annual fee, security deposit, and per-load fee.
