For the last 2 years, Rivers of Hope hosted our Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® Event in Monticello to raise awareness around the issue of domestic violence. The 2019 event, despite the rain that day, welcomed over 100 individuals from all over Sherburne and Wright Counties and beyond to demonstrate their commitment as allies to end family violence. This year, our Walk a Mile Event faces even greater challenges beyond weather. The COVID-19 pandemic makes it hard to get together as a large group to raise awareness, but that’s not keeping us from getting the word out about the impact of domestic, family, and teen dating violence in Sherburne and Wright Counties! We are excited to plan our 3rd annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® Event this year to go VIRTUAL! We hope that by getting people walking THROUGHOUT the counties (and beyond) we can INCREASE awareness of relationship violence in 2020! What is a VIRTUAL Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® Event? A virtual walk event is one that can be completed any where during the timeframe identified. You can participate in your neighborhood, favorite park, or community streets. As long as you walk for at least one (1) mile for this event, you have completed the VIRTUAL Walk a Mile in Her Shoes! When is the VIRTUAL Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® Event? Kickoff for the event is August 6th from 12p-8pm: This is when you can pick up your t-shirts and supplies to make walk signage to use during your personal walk. Timeframe for the event is August 6th-8th: This is when you complete your walk in the community of your choice! How do I participate? Register on Eventbrite today! Be sure to choose if you want to receive a t-shirt or if you want 100% of your registration fee to go towards Rivers of Hope programs and services. Join us for the Event Kickoff on August 6th! Choose your favorite 1-mile walk route! Remember, this can be in your neighborhood, favorite park, or community streets near your home. Complete your walk to raise awareness in your community! Wear your shirt and use signs created to bring attention to the cause! How can I raise EVEN MORE awareness for the VIRTUAL Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® Event? Connect to a fundraising team through GiveMN to raise even more for the event! Share pictures and video of your walk on social media! #walktogetherathome #walkforhope #survivor #youarenotalone Submit pictures and video of your walk to Rivers of Hope at outreach@riversofhope.org to use for outreach efforts in the future! History of Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® Events Since 2001, communities across the world have been holding annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes events to support victims of domestic and sexual violence. A Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® Event is a playful opportunity for individuals to raise awareness in their community about the serious causes, effects, and remediations to men's sexualized violence against women. During this one mile walk many men (and women) choose to walk the route wearing high heeled shoes to demonstrate their commitment to the cause of ending family violence, particularly against women.
